Summary
Clear and brief communication can prevent miscommunication or unnecessary overcommunication. Simplifying and shortening communication improves efficiency, trust, employee recruitment, retention, and more. The training addresses the following issues: • People feel excluded, disempowered, and trust you less when they don’t understand you. • People don’t read communication that is unnecessarily long. • People don’t apply for jobs or stay at their jobs when communication is a barrier. • Few people tell you when they don’t understand you or when they ignore your communication because it is too long. • Inequities of power and privilege will continue to worsen these problems if we don’t discuss and address them. In this engaging workshop, we will build awareness of language exclusion and discuss actionable ways to: • Build trust and inclusion by making it easier for people to understand your communication. • Make communication like presentations, surveys, newsletters, and job postings more accessible. • Improve recruitment and retention by reducing barriers for potential and current employees. • Improve communication with English learners and the effectiveness of translations. • Better organize and reduce writing by 20-80% without removing content or “dumbing down”. • Use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to make written communication shorter and clearer.
