WHERE: Boulder Chamber
COST:  $199.00 for Film Commission members, $229.00 for non-members

A great idea doesn't become a great production by itself. Somebody must figure out the budget, schedule, crew, locations, equipment, insurance, logistics, client expectations, and the hundred other details that determine whether a shoot succeeds.

That's the producer.

In this one-day intensive class, veteran producer Jed Mortenson, owner of Boulder-based Waypoint Films, will take you behind the scenes of professional commercial and short-form production and show you how producers take projects from concept through final delivery.

We'll focus primarily on line producing and hands-on production management, while also exploring the role of the executive producer and how producers work with directors, clients, agencies and crews.

What You'll Learn

Pre-Production

  • Breaking down scripts and storyboards
  • Building realistic budgets
  • Scheduling a production
  • Location scouting and permitting
  • Casting and talent
  • Hiring and managing crew
  • Preparing for the unexpected

Production

  • Running a professional set
  • Crew structure and responsibilities
  • Production insurance and safety
  • Locations, cameras and equipment
  • Managing budgets and schedules in real time
  • Working with directors, clients and agencies
  • Scaling from a three-person corporate shoot to a 75-person commercial production

Post-Production & Delivery

  • Managing the transition from production to post
  • Keeping projects, budgets and schedules on track
  • Working through revisions and client expectations
  • Getting from wrap to successful final delivery

Who Should Take This Class?

This class is ideal for production assistants, production coordinators, associate producers, filmmakers, directors, videographers, and other crew members who want to move into producing or take on larger productions.

It's also valuable for freelancers, agency producers, marketing professionals, and in-house content teams who hire production companies or manage video projects and want to better understand how professional productions should be budgeted, staffed, and executed.

If you've ever wondered, "How do I move from helping on productions to actually running them?" this class is for you.

Instructor Bio:

Jed Mortenson fell in love with filmmaking thanks to his parents’ Super 8 camera, some home-made pyrotechnics, and minimal parental supervision. That obsession led him to USC Film School, where he learned how to turn popcorn dreams into actual movies. He cut his teeth in L.A., working with cinematic titans like James Cameron and Gale Anne Hurd.

Jed spent 15 years in LA working on commercials and feature films.  In 2007 he traded smoggy air for thinner air and moved to Boulder, Colorado. There, he launched Waypoint Films, a production company that makes commercials and other short form content. Today, Jed’s still doing what he loves: telling great stories, making beautiful stuff, and occasionally getting to blow something up on camera.
